The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) held an unannounced Brake Safety Day earlier this year. This event aimed to raise awareness regarding the importance of brake systems and, for 2024, focused specifically on brake lining and pad violations. What Is Brake Safety Day?

During Brake Safety Day, inspectors across North America aim to identify and remove unsafe commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) from the roadways. In particular, CMVs are inspected throughout this event for critical, brake-related violations, which are outlined in the CVSA’s North American out-of-service criteria.

CMVs with such violations are then placed out of service and must be removed from the roadways until necessary vehicle adjustments or repairs are made. This year, inspectors compiled and reported data on brake linings and pads.

This Year’s Unannounced Brake Safety Day Results

Here are some of the results from this year’s Brake Safety Day:

• Forty-seven jurisdictions from Canada, Mexico and the United States participated.

• Inspectors completed 4,989 inspections, and 570 vehicles were placed out of service for brake violations:

The brake-related out-of-service rate in North America was 11.6%.

The U.S. brake violation out-of-service rate was 11.6%. In Canada, the rate was 11.5%. Mexico had a rate of 27.8%.

In terms of total inspections, Canada completed 1,021, the United States completed 3,859 and Mexico completed 18.

A total of 174 brake lining and pad violations were found during the one-day inspection. These violations included the following:

• Contamination: 62 units

• Cracks and voids: 51 units

• Loose or missing: 23 units

• Worn: 49 units
